Technion Entrepreneurship Day 2023, a hackathon was held on urban coping with extreme weather, the result of cooperation between ASSAT, the social hub, the student cell for renewable energies and the Sustainability Center.
11 groups from a variety of faculties participated in the competition, and received guidance from academic, government and industry mentors.
It was evident to see the different perspective and the contribution of diversity in human capital in the products presented.
The top three prize-winning places were reached by the following teams and projects:
First place – SOLATit, students Yoav Ronen, Esther Konstantinov, Andrei Saranko, Noy Weintraub and Neta Soto, all from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food, won with the project to develop a Sterling motor as an additive to an existing solar water heater, in order to use the water heat to produce local energy for a refrigerator and air conditioner in the home in an emergency situation.
This group had the opportunity to represent the Technion at a global hackathon on sustainability challenges to be held in Denmark, funded by the Technion’s sustainability frontier.
Second place – ECO SHADE, students Tamar Klein and Dror Arie from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Hadas Levy, Omri Leshem and Ilan Rosenberg from the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering won with the project to establish a cooling system at public transportation stations, where there is an accumulation of disadvantaged populations, by plants connected to manual water pumps. A social, cooperative and environmental enterprise.
Third place – Keep It Cool, students Raphael Zeiler, Harel Yadid, Shawn Wolfson and Ofek Har Even from the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Fatima Abu Rabia and Ido Reuven from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering won with the project to develop an application that connects disadvantaged populations with a pool of service providers, in order to transfer in an emergency to a protected place. Connecting the application with the HMOs and National Insurance Institute in order to create a healthy and strong community that helps disadvantaged populations.
We would like to thank the professional judging panel, which included Prof. Michel Portman from the Faculty of Architecture, Nimrod Peled, Lab Manager from the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Dr. Yael Danin Poleg from the Social Incubator, Alona Salfin, Director of External Relations and Industry Materials Engineering and Ariel Be’eri Entrepreneur (the generator).
Many thanks to the diverse team of mentors who accompanied and advised all the participating groups: Ofer Keren, Director of Energy Efficiency, Green Academy, Lior Kedem of Termokir Industries, Naama Shapira of the Samuel Neaman Institute, Or Sharon, a student at Ben Gurion University, with knowledge of microclimate and sustainability issues, Tali Nimrodi from Clariter, Bella Nikitina and Naga Venkata Sai Kumar from the Faculty of Architecture.
And one big and special thank you to the two students, Ohad Schindler and Tal Fine, representatives of the student cell for renewing energies, who produced the hackathon in a professional, respectful, cooperative manner and brought the event to success.
